Reserves of Inspiration: Exploring UC Santa Cruz Natural Landscapes

Nov 6 - Dec 8, 2018
Gallery hours: Tues - Sat noon - 5 pm

Open House Events: Nov 10, 12-5 pm  Dec 7, 5-8 pm

Trevlyn had a piece in this show. An exhibition of work by students, alumni, and community members who have studied UC Santa Cruz's Natural Reserves through art.

Nature-inspired artwork blends creative expression with the direct observation and interpretation of the world around us. Both making and viewing nature-focused art can open our eyes to the intricacies, complexity, and beauty of the natural world, motivate directions for scientific inquiry, and spark or renew our connection and love for nature. We are excited to inspire connections with the UC Santa Cruz Natural Reserves through this exhibit.

This event is co-sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Natural Reserves and The Ken Norris Center for Natural History, which partner to expose students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds to the natural world.

Seeking Refuge

Trevlyn Willams and Martha Castillo
October 16 thru November 10, 2018

Meet the Artists: Saturday, October 20th, 5-7 pm

Gallery House
320 S. California Ave., Palo Alto, 94036

This new series of work from Trevlyn Williams visits favorite themes of landscape and nature.

Specifically reflected in this work is an exploration of activities in which we humans engage to seek refuge in our everyday life such as viewing or making art and enjoying nature.

Refuge for me specifically is found in pondering nature and the meditative process of turning this activity into paintings.

Conversely, the world around us, the very nature we use to our ends also requires a refuge. That bird, flower and gorgeous scenery is all part of habitat that must be protected. The myriad species of the ecosystems essential for our survival on this earth all need refuge.

Wherever we are and whoever we are in the world, each of us should be able to live safely and without desperation. Each of us might hope that the least refuge we need is simply to be able to take a walk along a shore or wooded trail, hear birds and experience a spring bloom or a clear night sky.

Birdsong, Botany and Other Bounty

Gallery House
June 26 through July 21, 2012
Reception June 29, 6-8 pm
320 S. California Avenue, Palo Alto, CA

Includes a focus on favorite nature themes of local landscapes and macro views of flora and fauna. Also in this show is some portrait work where hands and faces (together and separate) are featured. We humans are part of the natural environment after all, even if we are somewhat deleteriously impactful. This show was to be called birdsong, botany and body parts. However, Martha, my show partner, and I somehow could never get beyond the body parts as sounding somewhat macabre, not a notion we wanted to evoke at all! Hence Birdsong, Botany & Other Bounty instead. Our natural environment, ourselves included rather to be inviting, gentle, beautiful, and very much something in which we should be immersing ourselves is more the notion we want to evoke at this point with our respective bodies of work.
